Urinary tract infections

Urinary tract infections or bladder infections are one of the most common reasons for visiting a doctor. Women are more likely to get an infection than men because their urethra is shorter and closer to the anus than men.

In the majority of cases (as many as 80%), the cause of urinary tract infections is the bacterium Escherichia coli, a normal inhabitant of the large intestine that multiplies when it reaches the urinary tract and causes inflammatory changes.
