Urinary tract infections

Urinary tract infections or inflammation of the bladder is one of the most common reasons for visiting a doctor. Women, unlike men, have a higher chance of infection because their urethra is shorter and closer to the anal opening than in men. In most cases (as many as 80%) the cause of urinary tract infections is the bacterium Escherichia coli, a normal resident of the colon that multiplies when it reaches the urinary system and causes inflammatory changes.
